2002 Eddie Bauer O/D Off Transmission warning

Hi, new here, but I have 96,000 mi on my 2002 EB Explorer, now getting a warning O/D Off light (flashing) and check transmission. Took it to the shop and my computer wouldn't "talk" to the diagnostic instrument.is it a transmission issue or electronic? where to begin? drive it or leave it? thanks

Re: 2002 Eddie Bauer O/D Off Transmission warning

Welcome to the forum!

Did you take it to a transmission shop, or a general purpose independent shop? The reason I ask is because the common scan tool will not have the software to communicate properly with the transmission control module. There are only a few scan tools, when enabled with the appropriate software, that are able to communicate with the transmission.

A transmission repair shop is likely to have the capability, but I wouldn't count on most independent shops having the correct tools.

Was the shop able to communicate with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM)? If not, then the problem may be with the scan tool rather than the vehicle. Your 2002 may use the Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol, and maybe the shop's tool is not CAN-compliant.
