I have a 2001 Chevy Impala LS with the 3.8L engine. Every time I start the car, there is a minor screeching sound that comes from the engine for about 3-4 seconds and then it goes away. This only happens right after I turn the key and start the car and I never hear it after that. The car runs fine with no problems. Anyone know what this could be?

Re: 2001 Impala 3.8 Screech Sound When Starting
Amen,
Depending on the screech sound, it could be you're starting. If you're familiar with the screeching sound made by a failing starter and don't thinks it's the case, I would suggest you check your serpentine belt. If it looks old or worn out replace it. Always a good idea to check the tensioner and the other pulleys. The tensioner should rotate smoothly. As far as the other pulleys, just spin them and make sure there is no noise. While you spin or turn them, you should be able to feel if the bearing inside turns smoothly or if it feels worn. |

I agree with Kemi, sounds like a serpentine belt. About $50 at autozone.

Take the belt off and try starting it. If the noise isn't there, then it's the belt or a belt driven accessory with a bad bearing. If the noise is still there, then it could be a bad starter drive clutch.
