Knock turning left
Well, this started a while back and later went away. Now its back and probably for good until i get it fixed. When I turn left about 80% of the time I feel a knock in my front end. Now I also hear a little bit of a squeak just before and after the knock. I looked and it is a little hard to tell where it comes from. Maybe the steering damper? I have read things about the track bar, maybe that, but I dont think thats where the sound is coming from. I think its coming from where the steering damper is attached to the frame (not wear it attaches to the tie rod). Any ideas?

Re: Knock turning left
Check the track bar. Easy to do. Look underneath when someone else turns the steering wheel left and right for you.
Check the end on the left that is mounted to the body for excessive play. |

Re: Knock turning left
Well, I took it in to my mechanic who does all the work I dont want to fool with. Also a good friend of mine. He said there was a little play in my steering gear assembly and I shouldnt worry about it. He said that it would cost a couple hundred to fix it and its not something that is going to go bad anytime soon. Any thoughts on this. He and his family are known for being great mechanics with a lot of knowledgeI would just like some other opinions.

Re: Knock turning left
What did he say about the track bar? It is unique to Jeep XJ and Wranglers.

Re: Knock turning left
he didnt say anything specific about the track bar, he just told me the noise was coming from the steering gear and not to worry about it. i dont like the noise myself and think i may get it fixed anyway in the near future. ill check out the track bar tomorrow, now that you have told me what to check for.
