transmission shifting problem

when the vehicle is cold the transmission will shift from 1st to 2nd at 30 mph and 2nd to 3rd at 50 mph. After the vehicle is warmed up it will shift from 1st to 2nd at 15 mph and 2nd to 3rd at 23 mph.

Re: transmission shifting problem

I would check the down shift rod on the throttle linkage but other than that I dunno.

Re: transmission shifting problem

Did the filter/ fluid change help? My 93 Tempo is doing the same thing. I had let the fluid get waaayyy too low. I filled it up to proper level, still shifts funny. Please post if you figure it out. BTW, where are you located?

Thanks.

Re: transmission shifting problem

I have a 90 Tempo with the 3 speed, the tranny is directly connected to the trasmission through a rod and has two main adjustment which control when the transmission will shift, my advise is to get a Haynes repair manual because it discribes in detail how to adjust this, should help the problem.

Re: transmission shifting problem

I fixed my problem, I reconnected the kickdown linkage that had came off. Feel kind of stupid for not checking it right away.

Re: transmission shifting problem

Does the linkage go for both upshifting and downshifting? I have the prob for both times, but downshifting it shifts really hard from 3rd to 2nd. Fluid was low, added some trans tune to it since it sat for about a year and a half, will be doing a flush next wednesday. I will be checking the linkage when I do the flush or sometime this week before that.

Edit: It's the 86 tempo with 89 trans
