Question torn cv boot

My 96 Sentra GXE 1.6 with 150k has a torn right front CV boot. You can only see the rip if you turn the wheel to the left and look in behind the tire. There is grease splattered all over the hub and surrounding area. I don't know how long it has been in this condition.
How safe is it to continue operating this way? I know it needs to be replaced but, any idea how long it will last?

Thanks for any help.

Re: torn cv boot

I have a 99 Suzuki Esteem that I have been driving with torn boots for over two years, one side has started to make a ticking sound under certain conditions so I know I am going to have to do this soon.

How long they will last, that is hard to say, water getting into the CV joints will dilute/pollute the grease making the spinning joints not last as long as they should, sand, dust, and road grit can get into them as well and tear up the bearings.

If you have dry weather and always drive on smooth paved streets they might last a couple of years like mine did. I would replace them as soon as possible.

Re: torn cv boot

Thanks for the info, Torch. I'll probably take the easy way out for now, and get a boot repair kit from AutoZone.

I know they need to be replaced, but I drive the CRAP out of this car and haven't got time to take it out of service for very long.

Re: torn cv boot

You have 3 choices (4 if you count doing nothing);
1. replace the boot with a boot kit that is split so you do not have to remove the axle assy. kinda tricky, but it can work.

2. replace the axle assy with a rebuilt one from Autozone. they sell them exchange.

3. remove the axle assy, and disassemble the C/V joint, put on a new belt, re-regrease and seal up. re-install axle assy. msot labor intensive and messy.

i have tried all 3 over the years. Now, i just get a new axle assy (#2).
