Trunk Lock Won't Turn

Hello All

I have a 99 Taurus SE I only have one main key for this car it fits the doors and Inig but it wont turn left or right in the trunk lid. I'm asking if these cars come with a second trunk key? Thanks

Re: Trunk Lock Won't Turn

The same key is used for both the trunk, the door, and the ignition.

Re: Trunk Lock Won't Turn

not to contradict dave because that isnt the goal here, but it may be, i am not sure when they switched to the one key system but my 94 has the old 2 key system, if it is a 2 key car you wouldnt be able to lock the glove box either, can you do that? My other thought is the cars locks were changed and the trunk was over looked, it happens. do you have a trunk release button in the cabin of the car? does that do anything in the back at all? Thanks for the extra info!

Ken

Re: Trunk Lock Won't Turn

When Ford used the two-key approach, the ignition key and the door/trunk/glove box key were done in a way that would preclude you from even inserting the wrong key in the cylinder. I don't know how to describe it in words, almost like the key channeling was a mirror image of the other key.

Re: Trunk Lock Won't Turn

I had a similiar situation with my 98 Taurus about 8 months ago. I first used the inside release to open the trunk, then I removed the panel from around the lock mechanism, then I removed the lock. I then took WD40 and squirted the inside pretty heavily and worked the key in and tried to rotate the key numerous times with occasional re-sprays of WD-40. Once the lock broke loose, I worked at it some more until the key turned easily. I then followed up with electrical contact cleaner to clean out the gunk and WD-40. I found there was a lot of dust, dirt and rust in the lock. Once it was cleaned and it dried out, I then used graphite to lube the lock. I've not had a problem with the lock since. I had to do the same thing to the passenger door lock, only I left the lock in the door and followed the same process. Hope this works for you. Good Luck.
