How often should I drive my Explorer?

I have a 96 Explorer with 222,000+ miles on it that I used to use for work. Well, now I have a company vehicle and only need it three times a week. Twice for around 12 miles and 75 miles on Saturday. (can't use company vehicle for personal use-can use wife's vehicle) Should I make it a point to drive it more often? I've heard that letting a car sit idle is not good.

Re: How often should I drive my Explorer?

I had a ranger that I parked for 6 months and ended up with a couple of minor yet anoying gasket leaks. Typically vehicles parked for long periods should be winterized/summerized. However, just starting it for short periods will probably cause more harm than not touching it.

Re: How often should I drive my Explorer?

75 miles on Saturday sounds like its getting enough action. Just add something to keep gaskets and seals soft, like 1/2 quart Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF through your engine every now and then. Transmission fluid through the engine has done miracles at times has even gotten rid of ticking noises on some, it just has really good cleaning qualities(like when you get some on your hands and you wipe them down and they're squeaky clean) and is also designed to keep seals soft. Just don't do it too often.

Re: How often should I drive my Explorer?

three times a week is more than enough. That's normal driving. Heck three times a month is more than enough.

I think you would be fine 4-5 times a year. As long as you get it fully warmed up and drive it.

One note - would be to engauge/disengauge your 4wd and low range. These are use it or lose it functions. Try to engage 4wd at least once a month. Too many people wait until that once a year when they need it and find it won't go in
