Catalytic converter

Hello all, I have a 97 Z24 and the flex pope is on it's way out leaking like a screen door on a submarine. I am going to have it replaced and as the KM's are up there the Cat is due as well, Has anyone just taken the converter right out? everyone is asking me why I am bothering to put one back in, anyone see any difficulties if I do not replace it? or has anyone already done this?

You have an obd2 car, you either need a simulator for your rear O2 sensor or put a new cat back on. Universal high flows are around 60-70 bucks.

I think I am just gonna have him replace the flex pipe and leave the cat, it is kinda tight on money right now, I will replace the converter when and if it becomes neccasary.

As previously mentioned, you have an OBD2 car and will therefore need to use either a catalytic converter or an 02 simulator. Another problem you could run into, depending on your state of residency, is the ever-present emissions test. I get to avoid that bullshit by living in ND, but for most people, its tons of fun for all. The easiest method here is to simply replace the cat...

No air care here or any testing, so I can get away with it. I think I will just leave it alone until I have to replace it, it is not showing any signs as of yet that it is having trouble, just thought that while I was in that area I could replace it but the cost is more then I want to spend right now.

Good luck finding O² sims for much longer. The feds are starting to crack down on the sale of them, since too many of them are being used for other than off-road applications (just like this).

so just a dumb question but will an exhaust leak cause lack of power? poor preformance and or fuel economy lose?

As for replacing catylytic converters with a through-pipe: Besides the 'computer' being unhappy about it and the check light staying on (which can mask other problems), I think its a violation of federal law for anyone with a business license to do such work. If the private owner of the car does it - I dont think thats illegal. Yet.

I don't want to sound like an ass, but it seems to me that it would decrease performance. Because the loss of pressure, it could possibly slow down the exaust flow...unless the hole is the size of a baseball...that's a whole different ...ball game? no pun intended

Depending on where the exhaust is leaking it can cause some performance loss. The O2 sensors could be getting improper readings. It can even set a check engine light.
