Question 94 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 Thermostat

I tried to replace the thermostat and and found out it's behind the exhaust manifold as it wraps around to the back of the motor. So far the only way I can see to change this is to remove the exhaust manifold. This is a former rust belt car and I really have no interest in taking that apart with out the help of a borrowed torch. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

its actualy pretty easy, instructions here: http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us...rInfoPages.htm be sure to change the radiator cap at the same time, they both give out at about the same time and is only $8 extra

Re: 94 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 Thermostat

The instructions are good. My Thermostat housing and placement look like the 3.1 engine in fig. 11. The problem is that the instructions for the 3.4 engine in fig 12 are more accurate. fig 11 shows the fuel rail going over top the engine. Mine comes around the side right across the front of the thermostat along with the exhaust manifold. I will have to remove at least one of them just to get to the bolts.

What kind of 3.1 do you have? With the old style 3.1, the thermostat is right on top. The newer 3100sfi, At worst you might have to remove the throttle body to gain access. Thats how I did it. Wasnt that hard, just make sure you install a new tb gasket in the process.

Re: 94 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 Thermostat

It is the new 3100 sfi. So should I remove the throttle body or fuel rail as the instructions for the 3.4 suggest?

Re: 94 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 Thermostat

If I remove the fuel rail I need to have a fuel pressure gage that will allow me to bleed of the gas to lower the pressure down correct? Can anyone suggest a good one or are they all about he same?
