Re: water pump

Have you gotten the 3 10mm bolts undone? With them removed the pulley may just come loose - or you may have to argue with it. In that case squirt or drip penetrating oil onto the joint where the pulley sits on the hub. Then try rocking the pulley by gently prying with a screw-driver, and turn the pulley and try at another point, and keep that up.
Mine is a 92 SL2 with the DOHC engine. The DOHC and SOHC are both 1.9 liters I think. It looks like you have to get the pulley loosened, to allow you to reach the bolts that actually hold the water pump onto the side of the block; then remove those bolts and pry the pump away from the sealant. I didnt have that problem, I took the engine out.

Re: water pump

You have to hold the water pump pulley from turning by using a long screwdriver between two of the bolts, while you loosen the 3rd bolt. I use a long 10mm box end wrench, 6 point not 12 point, and even had to put a length of pipe over the end of that to unloosen the bolt. They must have used threadlocker on those little bolts!
Then before you remove that bolt, you switch around and do the other two the same way. Sounds kind of hokey, but thats the way the shop manual says to do it - if you dont have a 'strap wrench' to wrap around the pulley.

The wrench I used wasnt easy to find. I had to go to a distant business that sold mechanics tools. That was years ago: Now you can order those same sorts of tools from www.snapon.com and other online tool companies. They are pricey, but I have yet to break anything I bought from Snap-On.
