Moving the MAS
Alright so i was wondering why when people go to gm maf why do they move them to right before the TB? and would there be any pluses or minuses to doing this with a stock MAS? the reason why i ask is cuz i want to order my y pipe and intake this week and i dont want to have to change my set up 3 months down the road or what not.
also is there any real pluses to running the gm maf and is anyone here running one? i heard their a pain in the ass to tune with. thanks the monster lol |

Before reading my advice realize that I am still learning alot about boosted apps and am just passing on what I have picked up. Let someone else chime in before you take my word as gospel.
![]() The point of the GM MAFS being put right before the TB is for a "blow thru" set up. basically the way us and even DSM's are set up is the ECU is only compensating for air coming in at the air filter. By putting the MAS after the turbo(s) you will actually make more power. Now using our MAS is doiable but its a pain because of there shape. The GM MAFS set up along with a MAFT not only flows better but can be tuned.

I haven't really looked at the GM MAFTs lately, so I don't know how much of an improvement they've made on them since I had one. I got rid of mine over 2 years ago because it did not compensate for temperature changes and pressure changes, so your tune would constantly change. I tuned it once in cooler weather, and ended up catching a lot of knock in warmer weather. Also, two years ago, Mellon from 3SI ran multiple passes at the track. He did it with the GM MAFs and did it with the stock MAS. He got better times with the stock one. Then to make up for airflow, he ran an open blow off valve, and used the opening where the stock one recirculates and put a breather filter in there, then used an a/f controller to compensate for that extra air. I know of other people who have gutted the stock one and using an a/f to overcompensate for it. I'm personally running the stock MAS, and might gut it or use the breather filter later, but I don't think i'll ever go back to the GM MAFT, but thats just me.

okay so if theres no performance reason persay. then what about moving the stock mas closer to the TB like after turbos and BOV? becuase i would like to run this Y pipe and set up some time soon

Stock MAS has to stay in its current location, if you want blow through, then you will need a GM MAF, and stay away from the plastic ones such as the LS6, they leak under pressure. One thing you can also look into as well is the MAP ECU. IPO ran that back on SL-T, i'm not sure if he's running that on T4 or not (probably AEM on T4).
