Low budget single dad,need to know the secret to removing the cooling fan and clutch assm. on my 4.3. I am replacing the water pump and am stumped on the clutch removal.Any HELP would be greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance. pags20

4 bolts on the backside of the fan.

Some later models have a large nut in place of the usual 4 nuts on studs.
If you look at your fan shaft and it looks like a large nut you'll need a 1 and 7/16" wrench, hold the pulley and break the nut loose. It threads on the end of the water pump. It's easier to break it loose with the belt still on the pulley. I found the wrench at Sears. |

96+ have a threaded shaft on the end of the water pump. The clutch portion of the fan has a threaded female end that screws onto that. The whole thing comes off as an assembly. Removing the four bolts will get you no where, other than making it extremely difficult to finish the job. You can find an illustrated how-to here:
