Re: Rear Brakes
Has anyone been able to turn the rear pistons back in with out the speciat tool? I was told that you can turn the outer part of the piston 180 degrees with a part of pliers, then push the piston in a small amount, then rotate 180, push in and repeat until the piston is in far enough. Has anyone been able to do this? My car is on jacks right now and I am debating whether to buy the tool or make an attempt to do it without.

Re: Rear Brakes
OK...I just finished ths job and answered my own question. It is very easy to push the caliper piston in without the special tool. All you need is a large C clamp and a big pair of channel locks or vise grips. Position the C clamp with the end that spins freely in the center of the piston. Position the other end right on the bolt that holds the emergeny brake adjustment assembly. Turn down the C clamp til there is just a small amount of pressure on the piston then take your pliers and turn the piston clockwise. It will retract a small amount. Turn the C clamp a little to apply more pressure and turn the piston again clockwise. continue the process until the piston is in far enough to install the new pads. Pretty easy once you get the hang of it!!!!

Re: Rear Brakes
Here's what I figured out on the VW brakes. You dont really need the tool. What you need is a "C" clamp and a larger set of pliers or vise grips. Also a second set of hands is nice but not absolutely necessary. So here's what you do.... Just take your "C" clamp and set it uo to compress the piston just like you would on a normal brake job. Dont put a lot of pressure on the piston just barely tighten the clamp, then take your pliers and rotate the end of the piston clockwise. The piston will go in a little bit...tighten the clamp down again and turn the piston...continue till the piston is all the way compressed. You will be suprised how easy it is to get the hang of it. Like I said a second set of hands helps alot. If all else fails go to Autozone, they will loan you the part for free.
