speed sensor loaction

I have a 1998 Ford Windstar. It has a check eng lite on stating Speed control malfunction. Everything seem fine, no problem w/ shifting or speedo. The part is cheap, I thought I would change it, if i could find it on the car. I know it is on the trans someplace. Can anybody help me??? Please!!!

It should be located on the side of the trans located around the exhaust. It will stick out a little with a plug-in with wires. I think it has some heat tape around it as well but the exhaust can make it tricky to get to... hope this helps..

Hello

I've replaced my VSS on my 95. It's in a very tight spot, on the passenger side on top of the trans under the exhaust man. I found the easiest way to get to it, besides pulling the exhaust apart is to remove the rear motor mount after removing the left front tire. O....by the way the VSS is to the left (towards the drivers side) of the motor mount. I'm not sure if the 98 uses a cable or wires for the speedo. If a cable you'll have to pull it too.

The VSS is held in by one bolt (just like a distributor is held in). I think it's a 10-11mm bolt head. You'll be working blind becaues your arm will be blocking your view.

Make sure you get a Ford part. When I replaced mine the first time I did it with the heads off as preventive maintence. That VSS failed so I put in another cheap one. That one failed too. I put in the orginal one back in and am running on it.

I hope this helps you out a bit. It's not a fun job. There are sharp edges on the heat shilds and if you have any amount of miles on your 98 plently of grime around there too.

Regards

Dan

Re: speed sensor loaction

Hello

I have a 99 windstar with a 3.8L and bought a new vss, the problem is that the sensor that is in the spot described in the other posts on the trans is not the same. I poured over the info in the Haynes book and the old posts and they all say this is it. Does anyone know if the 99 is different?
