cracked starter

I went to start my car, and heard a screechhing noise that didnt sound right,
then a clicking like it was the battery. so i changed the battery and tried
again; the screeching happend again, i looked under at the flywheel no missing teeth but on the ground was the bell houseing to the starter. can anyone tell me what happend or what caused this to happen bellhouse was cracked

If you would read the sticky, you'd understand my position on the matter. It's gotten to the point where I will just simply not respond to a message such as this.

You, and others like you, need to learn that this isn't a forum where a low comprehension of a language is enough to get you by, in this case, English. If you want people to take you seriously, and interact with you, then use simple grammar including punctuation and sentence structure. Reading your (or anyone elses') query in the form of one long run-on sentence is not something I enjoy doing. One reason that I find it painful is that I have a condition known as 'attention deficit/hyperactive disorder' and I can't sit there and try to make sense out of something that doesn't make sense. Does that make sense?

So, sit back, take a minute and proof-read your question or response before you post it. It's much less painful for the reader when you do.

Believe it or not, fair or not as it may be, the way you write can be a measurement of your mental acuity. People will analyze your style and judge you on your mental merits accordingly. For all I know, you could make Einstein look like a retard, but one would never know that by the way you write.

I think it's pretty accurate at this point to claim that I have a gross intolerance for bad grammar. Believe me, it's not something that just happened, but it's been in the making for several years. It seems anymore that nobody wants to take the time to do things in a way in which they can take pride.

I've got an answer for your problem above, but at this point I am not sure I want to share it with you.

Actually, I will. I will rise above that level. The problem with your starter could have been the result of either incorrectly torqued (loose) bolts, or simply a bad casting. Has the car been in an accident? Sometimes, the energy in a collision can transfer through the powertrain; it is not uncommon to see broken transmission cases due to frontal collisions.

I agree with silicon's loose starter diagnosis. I've seen many loose GM starters that worked perfectly and stumbled upon them while fixing something else on the car. So every time I'm under one, I give the starter a shake while I'm there and dirty.

Another thing that will blow the drive housing to bits is starting fluid (ether). If too much is used and it doesn't start the first shot, the ether going off will drive the engine backwards against the engaged starter drive.

Was the starter nose cracked? What year is the engine? Some block castings has a deficiency in the outer starter mounting hole which could lead to starter housing stress and failure. If the previously mentioned possibilities don't answer the question, that might warrant investigation.

Obviously, the core value of your old starter has been degraded considerably.
