Noise when braking and coasting.

I have a 2001 Grand Prix GT Special Edition 3.8 V6, and sometimes when I go to break, coast or come to a complete stop I will hear a noise - the only way I can describe it is it sounds like small pebbles are dropping on my trunk. Thanks for reading and any insights you may have.

Re: Noise when breaking and coasting.

Took it to a mechanic and of course the 5 percent of the time it doesn't happen decided to come when he was in the car... any thoughts?

Re: Noise when breaking and coasting.

Couple of curious questions:
1.Can you describe how your rotors look?
2. When you apply your E-brake, does the pedal go almost all the way to the floor board?
I'm just throwing this up the flagpole....If your back rotors are scored, possibly from dirt/junk coming loose in your wheel well hitting your rims/brake assembly?
As far the E-brake, maybe there is an intermittent problem with your E-brake shoes due to it being worn out if the E-brake pedal goes all the way towards the floorboard.
Hopefully Bob, Rich, or GTPdad has seen/experienced your issue.

Re: Noise when breaking and coasting.

Breaks are all brand new... I'm not entirely sure on much else, I bought the car just after they were installed.

Re: Noise when braking and coasting.

Do you have a bag of marbles in the trunk?

Seriously though, do you feel a pulsaton in the brake pedal when applied?

Does the noise only happen while coasting after applying the brakes, or does it happen when you just let off the gas and coast?

Do you have an ABS or Trac-off light illuminated?

Re: Noise when braking and coasting.

I checked and no, no marbles - who would have thought?

And no there isn't any abnormal vibration a sliiight grind that would be the best way to word it, but I've felt that on every car I've driven so I don't think it's anything to be concerned about. As far as the lights go - none of them are on. I hear the noise usually at a slow coast usually a few seconds after I let off just before or sometimes as I break.

This has me stumped.

Re: Noise when braking and coasting.

I have the same issue - almost like someone/something is rolling around in the trunk!!! I was told today it was the rear struts - my GPX is an '06 and I was given an estimate of $750+ Can I buy the ones that come up under NAPA auto parts site for the 06 Grand Prix, or do I have to go with factory?
