Serious Timing issues???

90 Loyale, 1.8, Non-Turbo

I just got the engine back in from doing a full gasket job, including timing belts.

I've verified the left cam points at 6 o'clock and the right points to 12 o'clock when the flywheel marker is at the center of the three hash marks.

I've moved the crank manually so that cycinder number one is on the compression stroke, and sure enough it occurs/ends at TDC on the flywheel.

I've aligned the marks on the distributor body/shaft and dropped in the the distributor.

Apparently the distributor/rotor wants to point to where I would think #2 cap point would be.

I've tried cranking her over while adjusting the distributor position with no success.

I've tried the trick of going 20 BTDC and dropping the distro with the same non-success.

What am I missing? I'm getting desperate.

I cannot remember it off hand but I think you should drop the distributor when your fly wheel is at the ingnition marks. That is how you get 20 degrees BTDC.

I believe that Haynes has a distributor installation procedure. I will try to look in it tonight.

Haynes recomends rotating mesh gear slightly. This is very hard and unproductive method. PM me with your e-mail address and I will attach you a page from FSM on distributor installation. Sprocket timing marks suppose to be 45 degrees counter clock off timing marks on the timing cover.
