Air Conditioning

I have a 94 Accord. Yesterday I was running the air in my car and I noticed the air getting warmer. When I stopped the car and turned off the air conditioner I noticed a sound like air escaping, sounds like it was coming from the dashboard near where the heater core is. The fans still work but I did not notice the compressor clutch clicking on - off. Is my AC dead?

Re: Air Conditioning

If you hear the air hissing noise, the compressor is working, just the freon is too low.

Re: Air Conditioning

So I just need to check for Leaks? It was working fine saturday. I did change the thermostat recently. Might that have anything to do with this?

Re: Air Conditioning

Changing the thermostat will not affect the air conditioner. If the freon is low, the compressor will not engage. So was the hissing the sound of a freon leak? Could be. I don't know if the 94's use R-12 which is very expensive or R-134 which is cheap. The best way to determine if you have a leak is to do a vacuum check on the system. Guages are needed to find out if you have any gas in the system first. To find a leak will take a can of freon and a freon detector. This could be an expensive problem.

Dude. I say go to Advanced Auto and get one of those freon canisters with the guage.

On a fairy hot day, turn on your car and turn on your A/C full blast cold. Let it sit for about 5 mins. Then follow the instructions on the can to fill the freon. The canisters contain chemicals that can help seal possible leaks as well. I did it to my car and my A/C got hella colder. Remember not to over fill the freon cuz that will cause it not to get cold also.

$20 a can, can't beat that!
