torque converter clutch control sensor can they cause damage when bad?

If a bad sensor is not replaced can/will it cause other damage? such as what?, if so.

Which sensor specifically, there is no one sensor that controls the TCC, there is a solenoid in the trans that applies the tcc based on various sensor inputs to the pcm.
