Question Starting Problems with Fuel Pump?

A couple days ago my 1996 JIMMY would crank but not start right after my mechanic finished intalling breaks. My mechanic said that its a sign that my Fuel Pump might be going bad. After a few kicks on the fuel tank and a few turning key it started and has not given me problems at all since then (3 days ago).

I thought fuel pumps just go bad and just stop working! could it be the relay? fuel filter? I can hear the buzzing sound when I turn the ignition, meaning the the fuel pump is working, but I just dont know if It in fact it is the fuel pump of not.

I replaced it once, 5 years and 100,000 miles ago. Is it time for a new one?

Thanks

Re: Starting Problems with Fuel Pump?

Check the fuel pressure, this will answer all your questions, 60-65 psi.

Re: Starting Problems with Fuel Pump?

I tried bumping the fuel tank, as well. I only got a day and a half out of it, before it went down for good. It is just a trick to get you and your vehicle off of the road or possibly a dangerous situation after a break down. My fuel pump needed replaced.

Re: Starting Problems with Fuel Pump?

Thanks for all your advice. I've been reading other posts as well and it seems that I have been pretty lucky that my first fuel pump has lasted over 100,000 miles. Others have reported to have replaced it more often.

Re: Starting Problems with Fuel Pump?

Well, just replaced fuel pump with a brand new AC Delco MU13 and even though the old one didnt give me any new problems, I did decide to go ahead and replace it since it had been 5 years and 100,000 mile since I replaced the old one. I must say that I have not noticed much of a difference, but still I feel that the peace of mind of knowing that I have a brand new pump is good enough.

I paid $231 for the original MU13 at rockauto.com! After reading the forums and all of your advice I thought it be best to spend a couple more buck to get the better part.

Thanks all!
