Engine Problems
The guy I bought my car from told me the car overheated and has been sitting for 2 years in NJ. I got it for cheap so now starts the fixing process. Before I start I wanted you guys to see and hear this so you can take a guess at what it may be. I already changed plugs and wires, coilpack, ptu, cleaned iac, and a couple little things. The whole car smells like gas. the plugs are fouled with gas and oil, the oil smells like gas, the exhaust smell like gaas. The mounts are worn to all hell. The car vibrates like crazy Crazy huh?

yea 166 in the front bank and 0 in the rear. Mitsu did the comp test, they said when they were testing 2,4,6 the needle didn't move. some guys say it may be a timing issue, don't know

Its not going to be a timing issue, but thats easy to check, so you should do it anyway, just take of the timing belt covers and then turn the crank pulley by hand untill the mark lines up, then look at the marks on the cams, they should be lined up to their corresponding marks.
why did the car overheat? the radiator is ugly looking, but it could have ben the water pump, I had the bearings on my pump seize then release a few hours later, but it made the car overheat. but if eerything smells of gas then yit sounds like you need to get that rear bank working first. good luck dude!

If you have zero compression in the rear bank and the car had been overheating, i'm actually surprised the car would start. In this case, your head gasket is either blown or your heads are warped. This happened to me 2 years ago from overheating so bad, so i just decided to go ahead and rebuild the entire engine.

Yeah I figure there's a possibility of HG failure or warped heads. Last night I got in the car and revved it hard and I would get some white smoke out the exhaust but only when I revved hard. Should we rule out the possibility of a faulty water pump? Thanks for the info guys

Sounded like there was some bent valves in there to me, could also cause 0 compression, but maybe it was just the sound quality.

if the bearings in the water pump arent making any noise then I prob. wouldnt worry about the pump, the vanes on these pumps are the best ive seen, and dont seem to deteriorate very often. But I would ask the guy you bought it from why it overheated, I would worry about fixing the problems just to have the same issue come up and bite my ass again.

Very true, that why I have an engine on reserve. Well I might as well ask. Do the 93 3000gts have the forged rods and crank. I know they're 4 bolt mains but I'm not sure about the crank and rods. Will it drop in to a second gen with no need to rewire anything like the 91/92? I really appreciate it guys

Only TT's are 4 bolt. All DOHCs are forged crank and rods 93+. Also 93 should drop right in.

okay so I tried taking the heads off to get a proper perspective but the tensioneeer is giving me a hard time. My buddy told me to cut the timing belt since it was old and everything needed to be changed anyway. He said it wouldn't hurt the engine as it was at a stand still. Is this safe?

u can loosen the tensioner pulley bolt, remove the tensioner pulley, or just remover the hydraulic tensioner. then the belt will go slack and can be removed from the cams. however to replace the timing belt u must remove the driver side motor mount bracket on the engine block.
good luck. i think u will probably find some bent valves when u pull the head.
