Re: Laptop Question error code

The NTFS file system is corrupt. That actual system file may be corrupt, bad data somewhere, or SCSI and/or IDE drivers are corrupted. Run a diskcheck if possible to see if it will repair the problem. Did you install any new software prior to this?

Re: Laptop Question error code

I find it hard to believe that an operating system file being corrupt is limiting you from booting to a system disc. Make sure in your BIOS that under the boot menu, CD is listed above the hard drive. Then also make sure you hit a key when it asks to boot to the CD drive.

After you get into the Win XP setup, go to the repair console. Run the command of "chkdsk" and let us know if you get anywhere with that or if it detects errors that are unfixable.

When i start the system with the XP disc in i can get to the menu to select install/repair but when i select either one i get that blue screen. Im not sure if its the same error codes but its the same blue screen.

Re: Laptop Question error code

Alright so i just spent an hour chatting with "dell tech support" Using the error codes i listed they claim its a harddrive fault and i need to replace that.

My warranty expired in 2006 so i would have to pay. Im working on trying to get them to fix it for free though. Ill comment again when i have more information on the topic

Re: Laptop Question error code

To format, you'd have to do it either through the command prompt or hook the laptop up to another machine. And I would absolutely, positively, make sure the problem is nothing else but the hard drive and a format is the only solution. I've learned this the hard way.

Re: Laptop Question error code

Why not buy a new hard disk, and put the existing disk in an external USB2 case, to be used as additional storage.

You can install Windows on the new disk, and it'll be easy to format the existing one - just plug it into another computer for format.

Well im trying to sell it so i want to avoid putting money into it if i can. If there is a way i can format the hard drive thats in there i would like to do that. Otherwise ill probably end up listing it on ebay with the faults.

Re: Laptop Question error code

OK, just get an external 2.5" USB2.0 case. They're about $10, and will allow you to plug the drive into another computer and format it.

How hard is it to remove the drive from the laptop? and whats the risk that i could mess something up? Im somewhat good with taking stuff apart and putting it back together the right way.
