97 Grand Am Heater Core Bypass?

I did a search and found this thread from Xeroinfinity: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=672471

But it's for 99+. Mine's a 97. Basically what I'd like to do is bypass the heatercore for now (who needs a heater in 100 degree Mississippi weather??), and get one and install it myself sometime soon before winter. Hell I might not even need it then, our winters down here have been nil the past few years.

Anyway since most of the topics in that forum are locked I'm not sure I can reply there so I am here. Could those directions be used for the 97?

I read in other topics that all I'd need to do is hook the hoses that go in and out of the heatercore together to bypass. I think one person said that you could use some sort of thing to junction them together, or another hose. This is true right? Makes sense anyway but I am a n00b, still learning.

I am assuming this would prevent the heat from coming up out of the defroster vent below my windshield due to the bad heater core, and the loss of coolant from it. My A/C is also not blowing cold air anymore, but I don't know if that's related to a bad heater core or if it's just low on freon. Thoughts?

So much to learn....

Re: 97 Grand Am Heater Core Bypass?

Yes just hook a hose up to the two lines coming from the engine to the heater core.

That Heater core thread for the 99 is close but not exactly the same. I know thier used to be a 95-97 HC replace thread somewhere in the GA forums or the N-body section.....

btw the Tips and Maintenance section is for procedures and tips not questions.
You did the right thing by posting here and a link to that thread

I'll see if I can locate that thread.

Hey thanks Xero. I called a local repair place, just to see how much they'd charge for a bypass or a heater core and he claims that the car might run hot if I do a bypass but that he wasn't sure, but that some Pontiacs do run hot without the heater core hooked up. Is that true?
