Anyone like to shoot?

Are there any hunters/trap shooters here? I recently rekindled my love for guns, I just thought I would see if there were any others around. Any one got any good stories?

I like to hunt/shoot. I got a nice story. Me, my wife and our friend Wes went out hunting (Wes and me where hunting she went for the walk) we where out for quit some time, and we saw a buck jump across our path. So I stayed at the path and our friend Wes went into the woods to try to scare it out, after waiting for a few mins I decided to put my gun on safe and walk down to Wes. As I put my gun on safe it went off, lucky I had the gun pointing down at the ground. Wes came running over and asked if I shoot it. I said no my gun went off on safe. lol The gun I was using was a 30.30 Lever Action Remington (I think it was a remmie)

Good times. I shot a Possum in my back yard last year. Thing would walk by my backdoor same time every night. I sat out there with a case of beer and 2 BB handguns, and popped caps. First shot right threw the neck.

Re: Anyone like to shoot?

Damn Wil, you used to TEACH it? Got any old books on it that you might want to throw my way?

I guess the coolest story I have is when I stuck a bottle on the top of a tree and told my buddy it was coming off... without a bullet hitting the bottle. One shot later the bottle tumbled off the tree with a few inches of the tree hanging out the bottom. Oh there was also that one time that I went deer hunting for 5 years and never got shit. I dont think it was my fault though, of the only three deer I ever had a shot at, one was on someone elses land which I was specifically told not to shoot on and my uncle scared off the other two.

I have some old manuals from when I was going through intructors course. I don't know if they will really help or not. Alot of it is nomeclature for the things you probably do now (but may not understand you are doing it). Like the definition of Sight picture, sight alignment, breathing control, tigger squeeze. I'll see if I can dig them up and if I can I'll see about making you some copies if you are intersted.

Basicly a huge book on the fundamentals of marksmanship, complete with different positions and range hand signals.

Honestly though the book only teaches you so much. After teaching marksmanship I can pretty much look at a shot group (Without seeing you fire a shot) and tell you exactly what you are doing wrong. A book can't teach that.

If you are having a specific problem I could probably help you with it.

Edit: I taught both rifle marksmanship and pistol marksmanship.

Ahh, I thought you meant like you were a sniper school teacher or something. I got the run down of some of those fundamentals when I was in gun safety, I'm not all too worried about those. I was thinking more about long range stuff. Right now I think the limiting factor is my scope, the thing gets loose after about 200 shots and I didnt realize why I had to sight in three times after having it on for two days. Someday I will get a decent rifle rest, put it on a bench, and really sight it in at 100 yds (.22 mind you). Then I will shoot some groups and have you tell me whats up. I can get a pic of my favorite group here quick...

Here are my two armaments of choice: Marlin 25N .22LR, cammo stock, Bushnell scope and a Ruger M77 Mark II .308 Win., Leupold scope.

Here is my actual target shots. The dot on the right is one of my sight-in dots. The dot on the left is the goup I shot with the first kind of ammo we got... some cheap ass Federals. As you can see they were about as accurate as nuts. The middle group is the one I was proud of, that one I shot with some Remingtons we bought. That top on was a fuck up, Mike shot at the same time as I did and I jumped. Regardless, thats 8 rounds at 50-55 yards that can fit under a quarter .

I am thinking of upgrading a bit. I was thinking about a .17 HMR for a while, but my buddy made an excellent point... wind makes a 17 grain bullet like that its bitch. Now I am toying around with trying to find a .22 mag but we'll see how that goes. The .308 may be getting some upgrades as well. I like the short stuff fine, but I kinda would like to try some long range stuff too. I was thinking about getting a more powerful scope and a new stock for the Ruger as that 3-9x is kinda inept for long range shooting and that stock is just too god damn gorgeous to be romping around in the field with. We'll see how this all goes though, until the Talon has link, injectors, FPR, supra SMIC, and a better BOV I wont have a lot of extra play money.

Well when I said I taught marksmanship, I should have said MARINE marskmanship. I can put a group the size of my fist in the black at 500 yards with iron sights. Marines fire for qual with iron sights from the 200,300,500 yard lines.

I am definately a long range shooter.

Your shot group is actually pretty good, but from close up it's easier. Give me a group from 100+ yards and that will show off how well you really know shooting

I don't know why your messing around with that .22 anyway. It's good for shooting targets and that's it

In the military we pretty much only use 5.56 (.223 Remington ) and the 7.62 (.308) Than we have a standard 9m round for pistols.
