00 focus won't start

2000 Ford Focus wagon (84K...Zetec) won't start. It's had trouble turning over since the fuel pump recall and replacement a few years ago, but now it won't ignite. When trying to crank it fires but won't turn over, the battery light comes on (but apparently not my battery), then when giving gas it runs but smells like fuel. It shuts off when idling. No engine light. It's been suggested to me that it could be timing, fuel filter, or clogged fuel line, but I don't know! Help?!

How long since you changed fuel filter? So it will turn over and start, but won't stay on, is this correct?
