Re: change top or die

How old is the vehicle and how is the metal underneath the top? Are there any rips/tears in it, how is the overall condition of the top? Where I live the option would be to strip off the top, do any necessary bodywork to remove the rust/holes and then paint the metal. But that is NY and is somewhat typical, where you are the conditions might be totally different and the top could be in better shape.

Well, for starters, this is how you worded it:

Do you mean taking the top off completely and painting the metal underneath, when you say "strip it down and paint it"?
The reason I posted above is that if you go that route you need to make sure there is no rust or holes that are sometime evident when you remove such top due to moisture. If there is then that will add to any costs. In my experiences, I've always had to remove the tops in my vehicles because of their poor conditions, then sand, apply filler and then paint it. If your not concerned about that and the top is still in good condition, then dyeing it might be cheaper, and less labor intensive,(that is if you are going with the same color or darker.)
