Car alarm goes off whenever door opens--started today

Hi everyone,
I don't know very much about cars, just basics. I've had this 99 eclipse for about 2 months now and today it was acting normal to work, back from work, out shopping, etc. then when i had to go somewhere i parked it and went back to it later, and upon opening the door the car alarm went off. My key doesn't have buttons on it but they're power locks...I turned the key to unlock the door and the alarm went off as soon as i opened the door. nothing worked to shut it off except waiting a couple of mins, and then opening it to get out also set off the alarm all over again. since then--about 7 hours ago, its been doing this everytime the door opens. I don't know what to do, i'm thinking maybe i somehow turned on the alarm?? i don't know how it works but it never went off before, so is there some kind of easy solution like a switch?

Any help would be much appreciated...I don't know anything really about cars :S Thanks!

More info. about what year and model of Eclipse you have would be helpful. Also, do you know if the alarm is the stock one or some aftermarket? Post a picture of the remote if you can.

Re: Car alarm goes off whenever door opens--started today

It's just a 99 eclipse gs, its not turbo...the car alarm is the original, and i don't have a remote for it. when i bought the car i never received a remote, i just got a key for the ignition and a key for the door locks.

There is a slight problem about the keys, i don't know if that would make a difference. The previous owner broke the door key in the lock while trying to get the door open. he replaced the lock with a new/different one, and that lock has a new/different key. Problem: he didn't change the other lock from the passenger door. so now there are two locks and the original key is broken. i have to open the driver's door to unlock the other door with the inside button.

is it possible that all of a sudden the alarm is acting up because it doesnt recognize a key or something?? b/c it goes off if you open the door...

thanks for ur help

Re: Car alarm goes off whenever door opens--started today

The alarm is activated once you lock your doors with the power locks. You will notice the little green light come on in the dash that says "Security" and then after about 20 seconds it goes away but the alarm is still armed. Try using the original key on the passenger side to unlock and then unlock the driver door using the power locks and see if it still goes off when you open the door.
