Why buy an X ?

I was just wondering...why do you all love the X and think its so great for off roading? is it because its somewhat cheaper than the competition ? or is it just good off roading potential?

I was just wondering...cuz im 15 and my first truck is gonna be my dads 92 yoda pick up..and the underbody is all rusty and it creaks when like a front tire goes down but the rest dont...so im looking into saving up for a new 4x4 and was just wondering..how much does a new X cost? and to make it off road worthy?

If you're going offroading, I would keep the Toyota as long as it's a 4x4.

There are TONS of upgrade options for that vehicle. You could put a new suspension lift on it and have a very capable vehicle.

Most people who offroad their Xterras did so because they wanted a new truck that they could drive to work in, and take offroading.

Since you're 15, I would keep my expenses down by taking the truck and spend some money upgrading it. Why would you want new vehicle payments, and still be looking at upgrades?

Keep the truck, have money to get laid, and wait until you're 30 to buy something new.

Oh, and also, remember statistically you're going to get in 1-2 wrecks before you are 18 so keep something that's cheap to fix. (yes, I know that sounds like your dad).

I waited until I was 18 to have my first accident. Does that make me special?

I just wanted to add that the Xterra has a leaf spring and torsion bar suspension so it too will creak after awhile.

Another point to make is what happens after the Xterra? If that's your first vehicle, where do you go from there? your young years should be a time of cheap transportation and having something to look forward to rewarding yourself with when you've "made it."

Otherwise, I agree with Schludwiller on all points.

Toyotas are excellent offroad vehicles. Their engines are super reliable, they have a large aftermarket, and their axles are very strong for their size. Models after 1985 all have IFS, but are still quite capable. Toyotas don't have the stearing problems that Nissans have when used offroad. Their aftermarket is HUGE.

I have been driving since I was 16 (I am 26 now) and have never gotten into an accidents ever. nor any tickets. I also drive "professionally". (I have a school bus license, and am qualified to drive commerically in CA) But statistically I am a special case. Odds are you will get into trouble, cause you are a teen.

Spend your teens years driving a reliable beater car. It will teach you to appreciate a new car when you can afford one, then when that time comes, it will be much more satisfying.

Also with a beater car, you will learn MORE about automechanics then you ever thought. Small things will break and go wrong, and you have to learn to fix them yourself. This is a great way to learn about auto-maintenance, and being a responsible car owner.

For the reasons listed above, teens DO NOT DESERVE NEW CARS.
