1995 Villager Tachometer Problems

The tach on my 95 Villager became intermittent several years ago and now rarely comes alive. The car runs fine and I have tried to get wiring diagrams/info on how the tach is driven from the dealer but the said they would probably need to replace the instrument cluster. There must be a loose/burnt connection or some sort of sending unit. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

The pcm receives tach info from the cam sensor inside the distributor and sends it to the instrument cluster. You can try to re-seat the harness connection at the I/C and see if it helps. More than likely the dealer is right about replacing the I/C.

I pulled the distributor and checked the cam postition sensor - voltage drops were in specs. No OBD I code for the cam sensor either, so I figure is it is a connection. When I take long road trips sometimes the tach comes alive and will work on and off for days, but in town (short trips) it never works. I pulled the panels and am staring at the PCM. Not sure which wire to wiggle and concerned I might do more harm. I will try to get to the back of the I/C and wiggle there. Thanks for the response.
