Borla Exhaust Vibration

Several years ago I had my stock muffler removed and a Borla Turbo Muffler installed in it's place. It's been the perfect muffler for my truck. Last night the weld at the back end of the muffler let loose and the tailpipe broke away from it. It sounded great but I needed to fix it. I had a new tailpipe made that turned 90 degrees and exited just before the rear tire. It still sounds better then it did originally but now stopped at idle in drive there is a vibration that wasn't there before. I feel it in the steering wheel. If I go to neutral the rpm's pick up and the vibration goes away. Any ideas...I'm going back Monday to have a split chrome end piece put on but I don't want to do that if I can't get rid of the vib. Or maybe the end piece will change the vibration...

Re: Borla Exhaust Vibration

This is ususally some part of the exhaust, which vibrates, touching a stationary point on the frame or body.

A muffler technician with some experience can check from underneath (standing in the pit) while you duplicate the buzz by shifting between neutral and drive; shouldn't take more than a minute to locate if it's an exhaust problem.

Re: Borla Exhaust Vibration

I just went out and looked under the truck...nothing is close to touching anything...the Borla muffler is a lot smaller then the original and there is plenty of room for it. It seems that the RPM's are too low. If I turn the AC off or go from drive to neutral the RPM's pick up and the vibration goes away. I think the exhaust is resonating with the body. When I get the new dual tip Monday I hope that will help.

Re: Borla Exhaust Vibration

More than likely there's a leak somewhere.

Re: Borla Exhaust Vibration

I looked for a leak and found none...what I did find was a that a new hanger with a very short piece of rubber separating the part that was welded to the frame and the part that was welded to the exhaust pipe. I think the muffler is just vibrating thru the hanger and into the frame. I'll see if I can't get them to reuse a hanger that's a little farther back or do something to get the hanger off the frame.

Re: Borla Exhaust Vibration

I took it to the shop and they welded a chrome dual end piece on to the tailpipe. It looks great and it doesn't vibrate anymore :-)
