Modifying fog light switch

Has anyone opened up the Factory foglight switch on a 2000 Silverado and put in an aftermarket switch inside the factory one? If so, how did it work? How difficult was it? I've done some custom stereo installs and I'm a carpenter by trade so I figure if it's possible I can do it.
If nobody has done this I'll try it and post my results.

Re: Modifying fog light switch

I put factory driving lights on my truck and took out the box on the dash and drilled a hole and mounted a switch. I wired it all up and I had bought a switch with a little blue LED in it and that sucker was so bright I had to take it back out. I spent so much time and effort and I just said the heck with it and installed the switch box that came with the lights and took the truck to a dealer to reprogram the computer...now it's all factory and I'm happy!

Re: Modifying fog light switch

I pulled out the switch and to my surprise it didn't say Delco it said (shudder) Lucas(AKA the prince of darkness). I briefly had flashes of my father's '89 Range Rover and all the money it sucked up in repairs(~ $10k/year toward the end). After my horror sbusided, I did the modification but it probably would have been easier to start with a factory cargo light switch without the fog light button. The internal circuit board is wired to both switches and it's hard to get it out without breaking the little bulb inside the switch. Initially I was going to gut the whole thing and put the switches for both of my sets of lights together. Unfortunately if you disconnect the cargo light switch the light doesn't work at all, even with the dome light. Although I have a cap and the cargo light is pretty useless I hate things not working in my truck.
I found a light up toggle that's almost exactly the same size as factory switch. I wired up my lights to come on with the parking lights so when it's really foggy I can leave the headlights off and drive with just the fogs. Personally I think all cars should be wired this way since in dense fog all the headlights do is blind you and the fog lights shine under the fog(in theory, factory lights almost never work) lighting the road. I realize this configuration is probably illegal but to quote South Park "don't care, don't care, don't care!"

Re: Modifying fog light switch

The way GM and all other manufacturers have the fog lamps wired up is to meet state and provincial vehicle highway regulations. Fog lamps are not allowed to be on by themselves and or with the high beams. If its modified and your lucky to live in a state/province with yearly inspections, it's gonna fail and cost you more money to remodify and re-inspect. If not, then you're good to go unless some copper pulls you over and makes an issue of it.

Re: Modifying fog light switch

I'm aware of why it's the way it is. I think it's another stupid law and the local Police have much better things to do than write a me a ticket for it. Besides, I didn't modify my factory lights, I added aftermarket ones in place of the stock garbage and put the switch where the factory switch was. The only time I plan on running the fogs alone is in extreme fog or snow where headlights would just blind you. If there's ever a question they're "off road lghts" and I never use them on the road unless I somehow accidentally hit the switch

Re: Modifying fog light switch

I put in a set of Hella Optilux 1200s . I was going to get the Hella FF75s
because they'd be a better fit but they were twice the price and I would have had to order them. No pics unfortunately. I'll try to snap a couple with my cell phone today.
