brake light switch location on 91 dx

Hello
I have a problem on wife car corolla dx 91, the gear shift is stuck on park some times even with the brake paddle is pressed and engine is running.
Then it releases and works again, this happens very often. I noticed that the brake lights were not lit when the shift was stuck, but when its working the brake light are lit.
Is this a bad brake light switch, if so where is it, is it under dashboard where the brake paddle is,
I need your help'
Thank you

Re: brake light switch location on 91 dx

brake light switch is up on the brake peddle arm. it is adjustable you loosen a nut then adjust the switch then tighten the nut if i remember right the arm moves away from the switch when you press on the brakes and when the brakes are not applied the arm presses the switch .you might spray the switch with some wd-40 and get it to work.the reason it sticks in park is a safty feature. you have to apply the brake to get it out of park.if the switch doesn't move freely after the wd-40 then a new one will have to be put in. look at the old one to get an idea of how much of the threads are going thru the holder and screw the new one in close to that.for the switch to work correctly the arm has to push the white part of the switch in,but not fully resting on the switch.
