Re: 700r4 no overdrive

How does it "not work in overdrive" Does it work in reverse? Does it slip or "go into neutral" in OD? Does it 'bog down' in OD?

It could be a TV cable adjustment, a broken reaction sun shell, or an improperly assembled overrun clutch. If it has reverse and hasn't been worked on, I'd check the TV cable.

Re: 700r4 no overdrive

reverse works.
from what he is telling me, it simply will not shift into overdrive.
doesnt sound like it is slipping or going into neutral.
it just wont shift.

(kinda like when i got my caprice and the kickdown cable on the th350 was adjusted so that i couldnt get 3rd gear on the highway... it was so short that by giving it enough gas to go 65, it was reaching the kickdown point.)

Look under the car and see if it really is a 700-R4. If it's a TH350, then it's working perfect. I've had people say they have X transmission when it's really Y transmission.

I would laugh. reminds me of when my buddy bought a 1981 Chevy Malibu, the kid said it had a 350. when my buddy had the engine rebuilt it turned out to be a 327

Well, yes. I gave you the most likely cause in my first post - an improperly adjusted throttle valve cable - one that's adjusted too far. This raises the shift points, makes it shift a little harder - and locks out OD.

Re: 700r4 no overdrive

ok. thanks.

That would make sense because when accelerating really hard, it will chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift.
the shifts are incredibly fast.
so letting the TV cable out more, or lengthening it will solve the problem?

Re: 700r4 no overdrive

To properly adjust it push in the locking tab and pull back as far as you can go. Then by hand, turn the throttle all the way to WOT. It will feel like theres a lot of resistance, but thats normal. By the time you reach WOT you should hear and feel a loud click. If you do then the TV cable should now be properly adjusted. If after this adjustment the problem still persists, then try to push that locking tab in again, but this time instead of pulling it out, push it IN a little bit towards the front of the car. That will make for a little softer shifting and should allow it to shift into OD.
