Sorry another transmission, but no limp mode.
Hi guy's,
Can I get some advice please. Yet another transmission problem, but a little different. First, can anyone tell me how to identify which transmission box I have? It's in a 93 3ltr LX convert. The Chrysler manual say's it should be either a 3 speed or 5 speed with O/D. I realise it is something I should know, but in all honesty I've never taken any notice of how many ratio's it goes through. The shift is marked PRND21 if that help. Anyway, the problem… A couple of days ago my wife phoned and said it had suddenly lost all drive (forward and reverse). I went to help and found that it had indeed lost drive and was just revving freely. However, with simple side of the curb test (moving the stick, switching engine off and leaving for a while) it would sometimes engage the gears properly, but then loose them again. I didn't drive it anywhere (didn't want to do damage) so I don't know if it had gone into 'limp mode' although I can't see that it had because most of the time there was no drive in any gear. The car was recovered to my home and there it sits. There are no abnormal noises from the transmission or drive train and at the moment it seems to be engaging fine, although this is only curb testing… I don't want to actually drive it in case it packs up. I have no idea what fluid is in the trans, it is clean and slightly overfilled, which is how it has been since I've owned the car. I would drain and re-fill with something known, but I've been reading horror stories on this forum that this could also do harm. Has anyone got any thoughts/suggestions please. I know very little about auto trans, but I just get a 'feeling' that it is electrical!? Any help much appreciated. Thanks, Josh. |

Re: Sorry another transmission, but no limp mode.
It sounds like you do not have enough pump pressure to work the hydraulics. You will need transmission work.

Could be so I guess, but when it does go into gear it's a normal solid engagement. I could be wrong, but I would of thought it might be a slow/slippy engagement if the pressure was low... does that make sense??? Josh |

Re: Sorry another transmission, but no limp mode.
It is possible your pressure relief valve sticks open and you loose pressure. Only a pressure test will tell.
