Unhappy car is shifting in to "limp mode", how do i fix?

i have a 1990 lebaron. the car itself has 69,000 miles, but the engine is a replacement and has 100,000. i just bought this from a friends dad i had the waterpump replaced and it just got a new radiator.

when i drive the car problems occur when i accelerate to fast in first gear. the car jerks and then goes into limp mode. when i turn the car off and then back on it will start all over again.

however this problem does not occure when i accelerate very very very slowly in first gear and wait to feel it shift into second. once im in second the car runs great, shifts normally, and i can floor it with no problem

what is the problem? how do i fix it? and how much will it cost?

any tips are greatly appreicatied

UPDATE: i got the codes and it gave me 12 - battery recently dissconected

why is my car going into limp mode if the battery has recently been disconected

First pull any trouble codes. This may lead you to whatever the computer don't like.

Hello,

To get de codes you have to turn the ignition key 5 times without really starting the engine, so only till the light's come up of the dashboard.
Read more about this in the link.

goodluck.

Do you have a turbo? If you do the computer is seeing a turbo problem and it will go into limp mode.

Without trouble codes you must have a sensor that is failing but not giving a trouble code. To find out which one you will need to get a scan tool that will read live data and drive it and watch the data to see which sensor is out of spec.

Re: car is shifting in to "limp mode", how do i fix?

You don't need a new trans, don't listen to that guy. This is an electronic problem. Personally, I had a similar problem in my Baron, right after I repaired my trans, when I put it back in, I put the shifter cable on slightly mal-adjusted. So what happened was that D was really between D and 3 on the shifter. So what would happen was, when I drove over a bump or braked or something, the shifter would slide up D toward N, so while the shifter was still in D the trans would be in N. Now occasionally, it would go to N so slightly that it would go right back to D or something, and the car would jerk and the trans would be in limp mode. I adjusted my shifter cable so it doesn't slide into neutral anymore, and no more limp mode. For you, I would recommend checking the trans computer plug to make sure it's sitting tight and the screw on it is tight, and also check you shifter cable to make sure it's not sitting loose (right on top of the trans). Like these other guys say, it could also be a sensor problem, or even a computer problem. Oh, and I don't know about you, but here in Chicago, any AutoZone parts store will use a scan tool to check your codes and whatnot for free. I'm sure other major parts store chains might do the same.

I have a 90 chry lebaron 3.0 also that had the same problem, I ended up taking a transmission out of an 95 chrysler lebaron 3.0 non turbo and rebuilt it and everything works perfect no limp mode for 2yrs now .

Are your battery terminals clean??? These A604's are real finicky about corrosion free batteries.

If it's an A-604 the transmission is the first thing I'd be looking at.

So the Ultradrive trans is problematic... you will fix the problems and you will like it.

SMOOTH SHIFTING!!!
