Intermediate Shaft

I have noticed on my 2004 Silverado that the steering intermediate shaft makes a poping noise. On my other chevy it was in factory warranty so the dealer took care of it. I have been told that if you take apart that shaft and put some grease on it and then reinstall it that it would take care of that problem. Is that true???
