2005 Envoy Denali : Stalled and locked brakes

I was driving tonight in my 2005 Envoy Denali and I approached a stop sign. ( the car has been driving great). I stop and and as I accelerate the car shuts down. I maybe went 15 feet beyond the stop sign and the car's brakes locked, all of thel ights on the dashboard lit up and the message center read Service Brake System. I tried to restart and was unable to turn the car over. I had power with light, etc. But absolutely no pwer to the car/ ignition.
When the tow truck came we could not move the car from park and needed sliders to get the truck on the flatbed.

Any ideas what caused this?

Re: 2005 Envoy Denali : Stalled and locked brakes

If you feel up to it, you could pull the lower "clamshell" cover off of your steering column, just behind the steering wheel. (you'll probably have to pull off the lower dash cover off to really get at it. It's secured with several screws) Once you get that off, you can see the lower half of the ignition switch (usually black) on the same side as the ignition key lock cylinder, with an electrical plug connected to it. I have found many times that by manipulating that connection, a defective ignition switch will begin to operate normally. I'm not saying it's an ignition switch for sure, but i have seen it happen so many times, i carry a brand new ignition switch and the tools to change it in my own envoy.

Re: 2005 Envoy Denali : Stalled and locked brakes

It is not a good feeling to have a car lock up and stall while in an intersection. I have loved my Envoy for the past two years, Having this happened really scared me on how i could not control the car in an intersection.

Re: 2005 Envoy Denali : Stalled and locked brakes

i agree. the situations i have seen are very similar to yours; vehicle dies, starter won't do anything, transmission won't shift, etc. It actually bothered me enough that i finally just decided that even if my wife was driving the car, or if we are on a trip somewhere and ours did that (which is very likely) we at least wouldn't have to worry about towing and and being reamed by a dealer if we had a spare in the glovebox with the tools to change it. i work at a dealer and i actually had a dealer try to ream me on a labor charge on some work the envoy needed up north this last winter. Fortunately i was able to look up the labor time for the job and call them on it. i feel for the people who fear getting ripped off at a dealer. It shouldn't have to be like that.
