87 vw golf gl starting problem
Hello, it seems that lots of people are having starting issues, not like mine. It has the 1.8L gas engine. Sometimes the car starts and I have no issues at all. Other times the car starts, but wants to die when the accelerator is pressed. I've replaced plugs wires, cap, rotor, fuel filter, fuel accumulator. The times that it runs like crap (more times than good) it won't get up to even 70mph and that is with the pedal mashed to the floor. I am stumped. I'm wondering if I should try replacing the coolant temp. gauge.??? If not should I start somewhere else. PLEASE HELP???

ok, i've come to some observations. I do not know if it is coincidental or what, but.......the other day when this happened there were 2 factors involved 1) the temperature outside had dropped about 10-15 degrees from the previous months.LOL and 2) also it was raining. I can't get it to duplicate because the rain stopped and it got warmer outside (imagine that).

If it happens when it rains only, it is probably electrical (coil, plug wires, dist cap & rotor)
If it happens when it is cold, but the engine runs better when it warms up, I would check the fuel injector o-rings, the get hard as a rock when they are old and act like a huge vacuum leak, you can check this by spraying some brake cleaner around the fuel injectors(careful to stay away from spark plug wires!!!!) and if the engine rpm changes, you know it is leaking. I hope this helps
