(better late than never, as they say)

If it's not too late to be useful, I buy most of the parts for my Benzes of various ages from Rusty Cullens. He has an online catalog with prices at BuyMBParts. Fast, friendly service with tremendous prices.

I think only the 6 cylinder 280E was offerred in the US in that body, but most things should be similar to a 230E, with the likely exception that the Euro model would have fewer options. The factory repair manual for the W123 series (that body style) may actually include the 230E, but should at least cover most of the car. New manuals are available only on CD from MBUSA at 1-800-4MERCEDES, or possibly from Rusty at the above link. The CD manuals run about a hundred to a hundred fifty bucks, depending on the series, but they include just about everything, including chassis, engine, and electrical manuals, an owners manual from one model in the series, and maintenance information. They are somewhat geared to a mechanic familiar with MB work, but they are the definitive source, including the factory recommended torques, etc.

Good luck,

I know...

To tell you the truth, I just got a 1983 Mercedes 230 E. I looked at the owners manual (only availiable in German), but it is the same manual given to the 280 E owners. So, the parts are the same. And the 280 E was avaliable to the US.

The 1984 version, from what I know, is the beggining of the next type of Mercedes Benz. The crowd would be geared towards the 20s-30s, not too big a family, but not small enought to be small. It's got an excellent interior space, and I love my car beyond belief (even if it's expensive since I live in the USA). Not really economy, but not wastfull either. About 20-25mpg.
