Ticking Noise from Engine Only at Start Up

I have a 2003 Grand Am with a 3.4L engine. When I start the car up, for the first 15 to 30 seconds there is a rattle or ticking sound then it goes away. I took it to the dealer and they said it was "piston slap" which is quite common for that engine and that I should not worry about it. My son is taking the car to a college out of town and will probably not be putting too many miles on it. I'm just not sure if I should worry about this right now. Has anyone seen or experienced this problem?

Re: Ticking Noise from Engine Only at Start Up

Usually piston slap can indicate a worn cylinder that will ultimately result in the engine needing to be rebuilt. Since you stated that the tapping is only at start-up I suspect you are hearing the lifters. Sometimes a lifter will leak down and cause a minor tapping when you start the car and then it goes away. This is nothing to be concerned about at the present time and it will not affect the car in any way.

Piston slap is more of a knocking anyway so I doubt that is your issue.
