I have a 96 Cherokee Country, 4.0L, 4 speed auto. Well sort of auto. I haven't driven this truck in a while because of the odd shifting issues I experienced when it was my daily driver. From a stopped position, it acts like it's trying to take off in 3rd gear and then will not find overdrive once at cruising speed. I used to be able to manually put it in 1-2 and it would find 1st no prob., now it still seems to try to take off in 2nd or 3rd. That being said, I have extensively searched this and other forums to find out it could be the TCU/TCM (Transmission Control Unit/Module). Upon further reading, I've been seeing the powertrain control module come up in reference to the tranny. Are these terms being used interchangeably or are the posters mistaken? I do have a TCU/TCM in hand, but can't seem to find where to replace the old one under the dash(?) or any references to explain the job. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to give as much info as possible. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
One more thing, can anyone tell me if I have the AW-4 or the 42RE Tranny?

Re: Help with my Stick-o-matic
okay, after blindly removing part of my dash, I got lucky and found the TCU. On my '96 it's actually attached to the inside of the lower dash skirting directly in front of the glove box. Two nuts and a plug and it was replaced. I also found out that my tranny is an AW-4. She now shifts like she should and I can move on to other things. Oh yeah, earlier I also replaced the TPS (throttle position sensor) hoping that would help. Thanks.

Re: Help with my Stick-o-matic
Bump
Kudos friend. You are the either the definition of blind luck or sheer determination... I just wanted to say thanks for giving the update to your situation. AND the 'long' description (which wasn't long at all, just right if you ask me) So, what else have you got to fix? |
