2000 3.5L stalling after starting

I have a 2000 Intrigue with the 3.5L with a 110,000 miles on it. About 2 weeks ago the car began to act up when starting. It would start and then the rpm's would drop to 100 and either go back to 1000 or stall out. It starts fine if it stalls out. What could this be? Thanks

Re: 2000 3.5L stalling after starting

It could be a few things. Is the "service engine" or "check engine" light on? Are you having any other drivieability issues (hesitating, misfires, mpg drop, etc)? Do you have any other trouble starting the car, meaning does it turn over without hesistating?

The reason I'm asking these questions is to get more information so others can help you. Lots of people have hands-on experieince with this vehicle and are nice enough to share their experiences. The more information you can provide the quicker they cna help.

Yup I had this problem on my 2001 at 140,000
It's the Crank position sensor. I had the dealer diagnose and install a new one, but I bought the books from GM for the vehicle and could tell you the procedure....

No light are coming on. I am getting about 20 to 22 mpg, I do about 50-50 city/highway driving. The car turns over with no problem and fires up quickly.

Re: 2000 3.5L stalling after starting

no lights would come on as this sensor does not have feedback capability.

I get 25mpg now and was getting 21mpg while that sensor was bad.

Re: 2000 3.5L stalling after starting

The Crank sensor does have the ability to throw a code, and most of the times will if its bad. So I wouldnt go that route just yet.

I had similar problems to you, and no longer have them.

Something to try for a while, would be this....turn the key to the "ON" position and allow it to stay in that position for a second or two before cranking the car over. If it has no trouble when doing this, I would highly recommend removing the ignition switch for a good cleaning and possible replacement.

I havent had a bit of trouble with my car since I took mine out and cleaned it,and now I can go from OFF to START as fast as my wrist can take it with no problems whatsover, which is the way it should be.

watch the temp guage right when it stalls. Should be right at the 1/4 mark - once it goes past that your car runs fine. It blips and looses 300-500 rpm into stall (650rpm) territory. Just drive your car and keep the revs up by using 2nd gear when below the 1/4 temp mark.

I vote CKP sensor.

Re: 2000 3.5L stalling after starting

Why the blip in rpms?

The sensor is changing over to the other sensor (2 sensors on one unit) and the one part of the sensor is bad so it switches back.
