Unhappy Leaky dipstick

On my '89 Jetta, where the dipstick tube conects to the block there is a moderate leak, it only leaks when it runs. Is this a common problem? Can it be fixed easily? Can someone post a pic? I can draw an arrow andd show y'all exactly where it leaks.

Thanks

Re: Leaky dipstick

The dipstick tube is just forced into the block, and shouldnt leak much to speak of - unless the tube has been bent too far at some time when the top end of it was unbolted, and the tube is now cracked. It could be that someone tried to remove it by pulling it out. This might have cracked it. You might try unbolting the top end and see if you can pull it out - then replace i with another one from a junkayrd. If its too tight to budge, it probably means the dipstick tube has to be driven out from below - which means taking the oil pan off the motor. (A lot of trouble to do that in a junkyard!) In that case you might want to try cleaning the oil away, and covering the area with some of the RTV 'ultra-black' sealant and gasket maker. Give it 24 hours to cure.

Re: Leaky dipstick

The plastic part that makes up the top of the dipstick tube is easily broken or cracked and the dealerships generally keep them in stock. They cost about $2.50. I'd replace this first. It could be seeping and you see the oil puddled at the bottom of the tube. If the metal part of the tube is loose enough to wiggle freely follow the advise above.
