tach hook up

I have an autometer tach that I want to hook up to RAMJET motor with a stock late model ignition system. Where can I tap into the ignition system to pick up the pulse that that will drive the tach to the engine RPM?

Thanks, geo

Re: tach hook up

The engine was purchased in a crate from a chevy dealer. It is a chevy 350 ci Ramjet. It is installed in a 1970 Chevy II I think RamJet first came on the scene in about 1996.

Thanks, geo

Re: tach hook up

If it is a 1970 distributor look on the top of the distributor cap. One terminal is marked Batt the other is marked Tach.

Not on a 1970 distributor. Only on HEI, which came into being '74-'75.

Re: tach hook up

The iginition system is the one that came on the RAMJET motor when it was purchased about 3 years ago. It is not an HEI system it is a generation or two newer that HEI.

Thanks, geo

Re: tach hook up

1. RED wire to 12v ignition source
2. GREEN wire to NEG side of coil.
3. BLACK wire to good GROUND.
4. WHITE wire to instrument panel lights source.

Re: tach hook up

The last post looks like the wires coming off the tach not the wire, from the ignition system, I need to hook to the green wire from the tach.

The coil for the ignition systen that came on the RAMJET engine has two connectors on it. A grey one with pink and a white wire. A black one with a green and a red wire. I believe the grey one comes from the distributor.

So now where do I hook up the green trigger wire that comes off the tach?

This is speculation only. I don't have a clue as to what you have for an ignition sytem. So, disconnect both connectors and probe all 4 contacts for 12v ignition voltage, probably the red one. Do not hook the GREEN tach wire to this one. You have 3 left. Good luck...........Steve

Please post back which color wire worked so that others can see the results.
