1997 Z24 Check Engine Light

So my check enigine light randomly came on thursday morning.

We did have tropical storm Erin come thru (I am in houston) but it is nothing my little girl has not been through (I was in Florida for 6.5 yrs and have been through a couple of all out hurricanes).

The week before my flex tube was welded shut. It had a tear in it. It was that at $60 or wait around for the part to come in and labor for over $250. Quick fix and my car has over 153000 miles on it so I really doubt I will be driving it for more than a couple more years.

Oil was changed 2-3 mths ago. I do not know why the light would come on. There is n o strange noise coming from my hood. No smoke or fumes coming from my back. Nothing is going on for it to do this.

Before you ask, yes I rechecked my gas cap, I park her under a canopy so the water really should not have gotten anywhere major. But I do find it strange that right after (or during, really) this rainstorm my check engine light comes on. And now it has been raining every day since then so... the drying out process really is not going good.

WHAT DO I DO!!! Money IS an issue right this second. Come friday I will be fine. Even $90 to get the thingy read is not an option. Am I screwed??

Re: 1997 Z24 Check Engine Light

If you haven't noticed any differrence in the performance, gas mileage, sounds, feel - then it isn't a big deal. It's probably a minor problem or a fluke. It could also be the start of a component failing. Take it to Autozone or any other place that will read it for free. Write the code down and have it cleared. If it doesn't come back on after clearing it, then it's not a current problem. Wait until it comes back and scan it again to see if it's the same code.

Then go from there.
