Brake Lights

I have a 2001 GTP the stop lights quit working but all other lights and signals work. I replaced bulbs and fuse but didnt help. After messing with the hazard switch the stop lights now work but hazards will not. A local mechanic informed me I may need to replace the signal switch, which is not cheap upper $300's for switch. Has anyone experienced this before?

Re: Brake Lights

Welcome to AF.

Your mechanic's advice sounds correct to me. A bad hazard switch which is an integral part of the MFS - multifunction switch (turn signal stalk) will cause a loss of stop lamps since the signal for the lamps pass through it.

You can get an aftermarket MFS for around $125-$150. The other option is to use a pull from a salvage yard or try Ed Morad Parts Company on EBay. Around $60.00.

Re: Brake Lights

Thanks for the advice and reassurance that I have been informed correctly. Have you or anyone else used an aftermarket MFS or used Ed Morad Parts on ebay before?

Just curious, I purchased an EGR valve from Advance went through 2 of them and neither has worked, both were faulty, so I went with a different vender and have had no problems with their product so I wouldnt want to do the same thing with a MFS switch.

Thanks again for the advice.

Re: Brake Lights

I'm a tight wad on money so I went the salvage yard pull route. No problems noted on the one replaced below. I have inspected the aftermarket ones first hand and they look good from the outside but never used one. I would have due to cost if a good used one was not available. I recall a few forum members purchased either the MFS or the ignition switch from Ed Morad with no problems that I am aware of. He warranties his used parts and is very fair. The MFS is about a 1 hour DIY job so the cost savings will be there too.

Re: Brake Lights

As a follow up. I called Ed Morad he had a car that he was able to pull the switch off of and send to me. A total cost of $75 including shipping and with in a week I received the switch in good condition, I had it installed by a local mechanic for $90 labor and am back on the road and so far without any problems. Hope this may help someone who might be going or go through the same thing I did.
