No Power Steering Assist - '02 5.3 Silverado Z71

I am wondering if anyone here has had this problem before:

When I turn to the right at low speed (from stop up to ~5 mph) there is no power steering assist. Left turns at all speeds operate normally. Fluid level checks out ok, so I'm trying to choose the next course of action. Dealer Parts Dept. says it might be a stuck flow meter, but hopefully the knowledge base here will give me more than a hunch... Any insight into this problem is highly appreciated.

Interesting! My first hunch is a rack but you could have a steering box instead.

Does the pump whine when you loose steering? What does it do at idle sitting still while turning to the left?

Sitting at idle, turning to the left is normal (full assist). Turning to the right doesn't so much make it squeak as it does hiss!

You lost me on the second sentence. If I read that right there is no power assist while turning to the right at idle.

YOu may need to just flush out the power steering fluid. it will get rid of the gunk in the box that could be causing your problem.

Hi guys. I have a 99 silverado 5.3L. I had same problem. only when i was getting out of a parking lot, turning is a hastle. I had to hang from the steering wheel to turn. At speeds it was fine although noisey. Fluid was spilling out of the resivoir all the time. I checked the fluid and it was dark brown! I flushed it and ever since its been like Feb of 1999 when i drove it off the lot!!!
