Top 40 Music

Who else is sick of going through radio stations and u get to the top 40 station and u hear that one song they play 35 times a day and 45 mins you go to the same station and its on again!!! Todays music just sucks. But not all of it. I don't understand why people like it. It just a 3 min song that they repeat the same lyrics over and over again, then throw something different in just to change it up. Like that A bay bay song. Theyll play the shit out of it then 2 months from now youll never hear it again and then it gets replaced by an even more annoying song. Like that Gewn Stefani song Hollaback Girl. They played it everywhere and now you dont hear it hardly. Idk if its just me but the music today is just to freaking annoying. Oh and that Beautiful Girls song. I freaking hate it.

Re: Top 40 Music

Yea I borrowed my brothers XM radio and it was sweet. Im thinking about getting an MP3 player and putting that in. My GTO doesnt have a MP3 radio like my Mustang had. I had 6 cds in my Stang full of MP3s.

That's the way Top 40 music is and has been played for YEARS on the radio. I actually stopped listening to it back in the mid to late '80's but this year am exposed to it more as my kids are just getting aware of the music on the radio and developing their own tastes. Top 40 music has really evolved over the years and now is heavily influenced by other cultures. You are seeing more Latin and African influences, and certain styles of music make their cyclical comebacks every so often,(remember swing was popular not too long ago?) It is music that is driven by sales and whatever the population buys is what gets played the most. I guess you could say you're in the minority when it comes to liking the current "phase" of Top 40. I've seen it go through the late '60s pop, th nearly '70s guitar and art rock type versions,( and easy listening as well,) through the disco of the late '70s and punk/electronic styles of the '80s. Just a few years ago it seemed that rap/hip hop ruled the scene and it seemed like it would forever, now with the advent of the internet and reality type music shows like American Idol, music tastes can change more frequently. Now it seems to revert back to a more "danceable" type of music that really hasn't had a prominence on the charts for many years, coupled with the cultural influences I listed before. Who knows, maybe in the next 12 to 18 months it will totally go in another direction?
What I did to solve my issue of music in my vehicles is I have 2 mp3 players loaded with various formats of music. My tastes in music have been called "eclectic" by others as it ranges from the '60s with their pop and acid rock to the supergroups of the '70s and yes there is some disco on them as well as a chunk of the '80s including many hair metal bands. There is some '90s and a few of the current decade's music and it covers rock, pop, country and metal. So instead of flipping through all those channels, I bought an FM transmitter ( real cheap on woot.com) which goes in the cigarette lighter, (oops I'm not PC here, I meant "auxillary power source") and tune it to a vacant FM frequency. I then hook up the mp3 player to that and can listen to all the music on my player through the car's system. I can transfer it from vehicle to vehicle and works well in my older vehicles as well. The whole thing including the mp3 player and transmitter costs me less than $50.

Re: Top 40 Music

The only radio I can really stand listening to is college stations where the playlists come from the DJs and not the marketing department. Major market radio stations play whatever will bring in the $$$ which unfortunately is the same 8-12 songs over and over. DJs have a list of songs that they are REQUIRED by management to play x# of times during the day to maximize the number of ears tuned to their station. Because of that, I am now a fan of talk/ sports radio.

That's why I love my iPod. Goes with me everywhere and it's easy to plug into the car stereo when I'm driving. Goodbye radio, hello metal!

Re: Top 40 Music

I haven't listened to free radio in over 8 years. There is XM radio here at work so i've listened to that for the 3 years i've been at my job, but otherwise my massive collection of music from the 50s to today on various mixed MP3 CDs is enough for me.

Re: Top 40 Music

i have a shitload of CDs for my car, better quality than radio anyway, and for someone thats spent a lot on car audio, it shows. Only time i have the radio on is on Wednesdays from 10-12 for my friends' "Moshpit Massacre" radio show, if i'm not at the show myself.
Definitely agree with your frustration on the lack of variety on the radio, but its been the same way since i was able to use a radio.

Re: Top 40 Music

what is this 'radio' you speak of?

I haven't turned mine on to actually listen to what is on it for bordering on a year and a half now. I discover all the music I need right here on A.F.
