93 Safari 4.3L no restart in hot weather

After driving over 35 miles when air temp is 90 or above engine will not restart, as fuel pump does not run. Replaced fuel pump relay and ignition control module, no change. Drove van 4-5 times until no start problem occured again, and running wire from + battery post to fuel pump prime connector (by fuel pump relay) activated fuel pump and van would start and run fine.......until drove 200 miles in 100+ degree weather, had to wait an hour for cool down to restart. I did notice the gas tank was low at about 1/8 tank. From reading posts could be ECM, fuel pressure regulator, fuel pump wiring connections/ground, fuel pump?

Put a voltmeter on the pump. Voltage yes, replace pump. voltage no, check back to relay.

Re: 93 Safari 4.3L no restart in hot weather

When this happens- see if your horn works-- it is on the same fusible link as the fuel pump- links corroded and arc at the terminal block behind the battery-- I used to carry a jumper lead with me to jumper the fuel pump primer just to get home- until I fixed the fusible link problem...........

Re: 93 Safari 4.3L no restart in hot weather

Horn still worked when nostart condition occured again, am thinking of trying a voltage drop down test of the fuel pump & short test but am new to electrical troubleshooting (have read some articles on it). Since the fuel pump is in the gas tank I suppose the thing to do is splice into the wires as near to the tank as I can reach? Anyway, thanks for helping me troubleshoot a little before taking it to a mechanic.

Re: 93 Safari 4.3L no restart in hot weather

I had a similar problem, 95 safari, the pump gets warm and the brushes in the pump do no seat properly, after long drive, hot wether etc. Changed pump, FIXED. I keep my tank half full for cooling, pump lasts longer that way. (my belef)

you're going to have to replace the fuel pump, i bet. that's what fixed two of mine with the same symptoms
