They are listed on a white sticker on the drivers door.

You will need a scan tool. Autozone, Pep Boys and some other parts houses read the codes for free in the hopes you buy somethiong from them.

Generic readers also pull Manufacturer's code. All the description says in manufacturers specific. On generic codes they give the componet name.

Re: 1996 Crown Vic. codes

Sure, how about sub systems like air-ride, abs, lighting control module, drivers seat module, climate control module.

Re: 1996 Crown Vic. codes

reekor and fleettech. We also use the NGS, PDS, Genesis, Nemesis. Most people that are concerned about warning lights are concerned about the check engine light. Most sub systems do not turn on the check engine light. So I feel most people want the cheapest diagnostic they can get for the light. Generics are good to give you a starting point. I don't know of anyone that has bought the Ford specific scan tools that will read codes for free. I personally purchased the PDS and I charge for the use of it, just because of the cost of the tool. Specific manufacturers tools for each manufacturer would be the ideal world, but how many techs can afford to do that? I do agree with the specific tools being better, but look at the cost factor to the consumer.

Re: 1996 Crown Vic. codes

There is nothing wrong with generic scan tools for basic info if you have a good service manual they can go a long way. I just find that most people that own them waste more money and time on repairs then the people that don't own them. I see it all the time where someone gets a low egr flow code and they run out and replace the egr valve just to get the same code come up again a few miles down the road.

I believe that generic scan tools can do more than just basic info. It really comes down to who is using it, and what they can do with the information they get from them.
